Aspectos generales sobre la estructura térmica superficial del mar, de la zona comprendida entre el golfo de Penas y la boca occidental del estrecho de Magallanes OceanDocs
Boré, D.; Barbieri, M.A.; Catasti, V..
This study was carried out within the Project Cimar-Fiordo 2. The general objective was to describe the sea surface temperature in the zone between 46º LS and 52º LS, and from the 73º 52’ LW to the 76º 30’ LW, considering the channel and fjord zone. The analysis was based on satellite images of sea surface temperature. The images used came from the AVHRR radiometer of the NOAA satellite, from the year 1995 to 1998. The cartographic representation and the analysis of the seasonal variability of the sea surface temperature was made using the software of the Geographical Information System (GIS), named IDRISI. The zone was with clouds during all the period of study, mainly in autumn. With the available images it was possible to observe a big difference...

Changes of Water Temperature and Harmful Algal Bloom in the Daya Bay in the Northern South China Sea. OceanDocs
Yu, Jing; Tang, Danling; Wang, Sufen; Lian, Jiansheng; Wang, Youshao.
Economic development around the Daya Bay, China has profoundly affected the marine environment in the bay area in recent years, particularly since the operation of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Station (DNPS) in 1994. This study analyzed the changes of water temperature and harmful algal blooms (HABs) for two periods: 1983-1993 and 1994-2004, using in situ and satellite data. Results showed that yearly mean surface water temperature (SWT) and Chl-a concentration (Chl-a) increased by 1.1 ℃ and 1.9 mg/m3, respectively, after 1994. The monthly occurrence of HAB was found to have increased also. HABs appeared only in spring and autumn before 1994, but occurred all the year round after 1994. SWT, Chl-a and HABs all increased significantly in May. Those changes were...

Conditionnement artificiel de l'huître Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Jorge Eduardo, Chávez Villalba.
In France, 90% of the annual cup oyster (Crassostrea gigas) production comes from larvae caught in the Arcachon and Marennes-Oléron basins. However, the spat catch shows many interannual irregularities and oyster farmers increasingly say they need spat outside of the reproductive period. Thus, the role of hatcheries in Japanese oyster spat production in France is becoming increasingly evident. However, the current state of knowledge about cup oyster reproduction in controlled conditions is limited, and hatchery professionals must confront various problems to optimise treatment of genitors so as to obtain larval breeds in good health and a lengthening of the reproductive season. To respond to this, we have carried out a study on three aspects that seem...

Freshwater temperature in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, and its implication for fish culture Neotropical Ichthyology
Garcia,Luciano de Oliveira; Copatti,Carlos Eduardo; Wachholz,Flávio; Pereira Filho,Waterloo; Baldisserotto,Bernardo.
In this study we verified data of water temperatures collected by CORSAN-RS from 1996 to 2004 in several cities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, and analyzed the possibility of raising the most cultivated fish species in Brazil. The water temperature from 1996 to 2004 was 16 to 28ºC in summer, 17 to 23ºC in fall, 14 to 17ºC (down to 9ºC in the coldest months) in winter and 14 to 21ºC in spring. Native species of this state, such as silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen), traíra (Hoplias malabaricus), dorado (Salminus brasiliensis), pintado (Pimelodus maculatus), as well as carps (family Cyprinidae), are resistant to the low winter temperatures. These species have a lower growth rate in coldest months (winter/spring) but a good development in...

Observations on the thermal selection of the pantanal caiman (Caiman crocodilus yacare) hatchlings (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae) BJB
PINHEIRO,M. S.; ANDREOTTI E SILVA,R.; SANTOS,S. A..
Three options of water temperatures in a thermal gradient that changed from 22 to 35°C were offered to Pantanal caiman (Caiman croocodilus yacare) hatchlings. Animals from two nests were submitted to temperatures during 19 days (Nest 1 - 20 caimans caught in the nature hours after hatching), corresponding to 1 to 7 observations periods, and 13 days (Nest 2 - 20 animals obtained by artificial incubation) relative to observation period 8. Caimans remain fasting during experimental period. Hatchlings were allocated in a enclosure containing three styrofoam boxes (120 L) disposed side by side enclosed by wire netting and filled with water to the top. Thus, the animals were free to access the boxes, which temperatures were changed at the end of each observation...

Ontogeny and water temperature influences the antiviral response of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Green, Timothy; Montagnani, Caroline; Benkendorff, Kirsten; Robinson, Nick; Speck, Peter.
Disease is caused by a complex interaction between the pathogen, environment, and the physiological status of the host. Determining how host ontogeny interacts with water temperature to influence the antiviral response of the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, is a major goal in understanding why juvenile Pacific oysters are dying during summer as a result of the global emergence of a new genotype of the Ostreid herpesvirus, termed OsHV-1 μvar. We measured the effect of temperature (12 vs 22 °C) on the antiviral response of adult and juvenile C. gigas injected with poly I:C. Poly I:C up-regulated the expression of numerous immune genes, including TLR, MyD88, IκB-1, Rel, IRF, MDA5, STING, SOC, PKR, Viperin and Mpeg1. At 22 °C, these immune genes showed...

Reproduction naturelle de Crassostrea gigas Thunberg dans le bassin de Marennes-Oleron en 1979 et 1981: Aspects biochimiques et energetiques. ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Berthome, Jean-paul; Razet, Daniel; Garnier, Jacqueline.
In summer 1979, the natural reproduction of oysters Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, in Marennes-Oleron basin, produced a large number of juveniles which was not the case in summer 1981. If one compares the evolution of the main constituents of the flesh, one can see that, at the beginning of August, before spawning the male oysters in 1981 contained 6,3% less proteins, 34,2% less lipids and 61,2% less glucids than those in 1979 and respectively 12,3%, 21,3% and 69,8% less as far as females are concerned. The energetic value of ash-free dry flesh of female oysters is nearly the same for the two years whereas for male oysters the value is slightly lower in 1981 than in 1979. The total energetic values of male and female oysters show a slight difference between...

Seasonal Variatrion of Cymodocea Nodeosa in the Ghar el Melh Lagoon (Tunisia) with reference to insolation, temperature and salinity effects OceanDocs
Sghaier, Y. R.; Zakhama-Sraieb, R.; Charfi-Cheikhrouha, F..
Two sampling stations were selected in order to assess the response of the seagrass to lagoon conditions. Leaf growth was estimated using Zieman method and rhizome production was evaluated by marking rhizome terminals. The vegetative development of C. nodosa inside the lagoon at the limit of its distribution is different from that observed close to the communication channel with the sea. The growth of C. nodosa show a clear unimodal cycle in the two stations reaching maximum leaf development in summer. Shoot density decreased from 915 to 500 shoot m-2 from the communication channel toward the lagoon. The average total biomass varied between 241.6 ± 34 g DW m-2 and 413.8 ± 46 g DW m-2. Leaf plastochrone interval varied seasonally with an annual average of...

Shell of the Great Scallop Pecten maximus as a high-frequency archive of paleoenvironmental changes - art. no. Q08001 ArchiMer
Chauvaud, Laurent; Lorrain, Anne; Dunbar, Robert; Paulet, Yves; Thouzeau, Gérard; Jean, Frédéric; Guarini, Jean-marc; Mucciarone, David.
We investigate the environmental and biological controls on oxygen isotope ratios in the shells of modern Pecten maximus bivalves collected alive in the Bay of Brest (France). Seasonal delta(18)O profiles, obtained by drilling the daily calcite ridges deposited at the surface of the left valve, were compared with in situ measurements of temperature and salinity. We show that P. maximus delta(18)O values accurately track seasonal variations in bottom water temperature. Shell growth rate has no significant effect on shell delta(18)O values. Our study demonstrates that daily variations in water temperature can be reconstructed within about 0.5 degrees C. Temperatures estimated with the paleotemperature equation established in this study were compared with...

Status and potential of Australian Lates calcarifer culture. ArchiMer
Mackinnon, M.
Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings.

Studies of the life-history and energetics of marine and brackish-water nematodes: 1. Demography of Monhystera disjuncta at different temperature and feeding conditions OMA
Vranken, G.; Herman, P.M.J.; Heip, C.H.R..
Aspects of the demography of Monhystera disjuncta were investigated at different feeding conditions (monoxenic cultures with different bacterial strains, and different densities in the feeding suspension with one strain). Embryonic development time, minimum generation time, egg deposition rate and adult longevity depend on temperature, quality and quantity of food offered. Body mass at maturity is an allometric function of food density. It is shown that a previously inferred selectivity in food uptake is an artifact of culture conditions. pH buffering and addition of sterols permit culture of the species on a wide variety of bacterial strains. M. disjuncta is less well adapted to take advantage of high food density...

Temperature and Water Exchange in a Semi-Enclosed Lagoon, Bamburi, Kenya. OceanDocs
Kirugara, D..
In the context of high sea-surface temperature anomalies causing widespread coral mortality, this study investigates the heat balance of a semi-enclosed coral reef lagoon system and any additional contribution of UV radiation as a trigger for bleaching. The study lagoon is situated north of Mombasa Island, along the Nyali- Bamburi-Shanzu coastline, at 4o0’01" S, 39o0’44" E (Figure 1) and has a surface area of 3.75 km2 and 12.5 km2 during spring low and high tides respectively. It consists of three topographic features: the shallow back-reef lagoon, the 300 m wide, 7.5 km long reef crest that is exposed during low tide and shelters the lagoon from oceanic swells and the relatively deep central longitudinal channel that collects all lagoon water at spring...
